Have you lived here? Write a Review! I wish Killam would read these reviews. The building is wonderful, convenient. The supers take good care of it, but... One male super here has made my life hell. He's been absolutely nasty for no reason. I have never in my life had to deal with such negative, hostile nasty people. It's quite sad really. I can't wait to leave. I lived here for a year in a 1 bedroom apartment with my girlfriend. While it wasn't the best apartment we could have gotten, there are certainly much worse places in Halifax (looking at you, Park Vic). I feel the 1 bedroom apartment was too small for 2 people to live in, but we got by okay. In the year we were living there, we only ever saw 1 tiny spider. The superintendents were pretty good in dealing with issues and repairs. Our freezer stopped working on two occasions, and both times they had someone come out to fix it within 24 hours. There were no other problems with the appliances. I see a lot of people complaining about Jesse and Al but I thought they were nice enough. Owen was really friendly and accommodating, so he was my go-to guy. One thing that did annoy me was that we had a leaky faucet in the bathroom sink that did not get fixed in our time there, and on the day we were moving out they put a brand new sink and faucet in to fix the issue. The apartment would get extremely hot in the summer. I'm talking 30+ degrees. The only source of air flow was through some very small sliding windows that did little to cool the apartment down. They did let people use A/C units in the windows, but we used floor fans instead. Overall, it is a good apartment building and is close to everything. The walk to Dal and Saint Mary's is only about 10-15 mins, so it doesn't get much better than that if you're a student. If this is your first apartment, you can do a lot worse. I have lived in this apartment building for over 4 years. Two of the super's of this building are absolutely miserable (Jessie and Al). They are constantly cranky, rude, unjust and make you feel like a nuisance just for being a tenant in the building. If you say hello to Jessie, don't expect a response back. I have been on the same elevator with her several times and even if you're extremely friendly, she still wont acknowledge your existence. She charged me $50 once because I forgot my key and needed to be let into my apartment. I literally feel like I'm living in a prison in this building. Every friend or guest I have in my apartment they question. If they see any unfamiliar face they will interrogate you and question why you're there, how you know each other, etc. I could go on and on about the experiences I've had but bottom line is that the super's in this building are bullies and only want to make your life difficult. Also, maintenance in this building is very poor. My kitchen cabinets have been falling off for months. The wood is so old and rotten that it falls apart every time I open a drawer. I've asked three times about this now and no one has ever gotten back to me or attempted to do anything to fix them. When you're paying $1120/month for a 1 bedroom - this is completely unacceptable. The only positive thing about this building is the location. ... Look elsewhere. I have lived in the same unit in this apartment building for about 15 years. I can fully understand the negative reviews of the supers. But honestly, I'm sure they have to put up with a lot of unpleasantness over the years from various tenants, the property managers, building maintenance (the building was built around 1978), and lots of other issues. Being always on call and being woken up at any hour during the night can be an unpleasant job, and I fully respect what they do. They have been supers of this building the whole time I have been here, and despite sometimes having a bit of (understandable) negative attitude, they keep the building (people and maintenance) in check. Anyone looking to party it up hard in this building will be sadly disappointed. And personally I am fine with that. They evicted a neighbour of mine who was consistently up to all hours (3-4am or so) on weekdays partying it up hard with his friends, and would have very loud offensive fights with his girlfriend. Aside from a few silverfish and very small sawtooth grain beetles, I have never had vermin in my apartment. There are definitely rats around, (occasionally in the garbage room, sometimes outside the building), but this is a port city and downtown is littered with rats. The supers are constantly battling to keep them in check the best they can. Since Killam has taken over they have relentlessly increased the rent every year, but though I'm not completely happy with it, it still seems fine considering the rent of units in the area. So am I happy with this building and the supers. Yes. 4.5 stars out of 5. I feel like I'm walking on egg shells in this building because of the supers. I don't know if I should smile or ignore them. It's pretty unpleasant to live somewhere where you're constantly having to tip toe around someone's volatile mood. I also hesitate to mention any of my concerns to the, (re the apt) because I know the interaction is most likely going to leave me feeling awful. They treat the tenants with absolute disdain. If they hate this job so much, why not find another one? I'm sure there are plenty of people who would be happy to manage this building and with a positive pleasant attitude at that. I have to wonder if their supervisors or anyone at head office has heard these complaints? I'm so glad to see its not just me and I'm not the only one who feels bullied by the superintendents of this building Miserable supers I have lived in Garden Park for almost 3 years now and have mixed feelings about the building. I recently moved from a bachelor to a renovated unit. During my time in the bachelor unit I had very few issues with the supers (routinely had 5-6 friends over for drinks and music with no complaints), but had a cockroach infestation. Owen, the older tall super, was great in dealing with this issue - he promptly placed cockroach poison throughout my unit and I didn't see any again. When moving to the renovated unit within the building I found Jesse and Al (the cranky supers that people are talking about in this review thread) to be very rude. I was given little information about the move and I had to wait an extra 2 days until reno's were finished. This was fine with me, however nobody would give me an exact move-in date to coordinate movers etc. Moreover, these two supers (Jesse and Al) were miserable to deal with and made me feel like I was a complete nuisance when inquiring about my new place. Owen completed my move-in inspections and was pleasant to deal with - I highly recommend dealing with any issues (even the smallest of things) through Owen when possible. Since I moved into my new unit I have spotted 2 mice. Keep in mind this is a brand new, clean apartment - mice should not be an issue. The newly renovated units are really nice in comparison to the older units. I was excited for the move, but am now half regretting my decision due to this new pest issue. Despite all of these negative issues, I must say that this building is conveniently located, the units are relatively nice, and the building is quite affordable. Pests are likely to be an issue anywhere in downtown Halifax, but miserable supers should not. The female super and her husband are worst superintendents I have ever experienced in my whole live. If you are young and have a social life, this is not a good place to live. The female superintendent is the most miserable/crankiest person I have ever met. She will not say hello or do anything to help you out. She keeps tabs on you has even made up fake noise complaints. Her husband or boyfriend or whatever you want to call him is just as bad. Towards the end of my stay If i had an issue i would just resolve it myself because it would take him a week to get anything done. Hes lazy and doesn't want to do anything. They have no lack of communication with head office and if any issues arises they have NO IDEA how to solve it and its like playing a game of cat and mouse. Also, all the issues I told them about that I had to deal with head office they did not once ask If i sorted them out. They did not give a shit. Not sure how they have kept their jobs for so long. The only good super was the tall and older man who would give you the shirt right off his back. Great man. I have talked to many people in our building about the female super and they have all said the same thing. At first I thought it was just me then I started to ask around. Also reading these reviews everyone shares the same story. CLEARLY THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG HERE AND NOT THE PEOPLE. I recently graduated university and subletted an apartment here for several months. I loved my apartment, sublet experience and the great location downtown. HOWEVER, the female super really seemed to have a problem from day 1. The two gentleman supers were fine, often said hello and smiled. Yet, I have no idea why this woman super is so angry and spiteful all the time. She would go out of her way to be consistently unpleasant, and heaven forbid I have a guest over at any time of day (which is my business but she really made an effort to make it hers too..). My neighbours on both sides of my apartment share the same feelings towards her. She's just awful for no reason. If you can avoid meeting this woman, ide advise it. I don't share the negativity of the past two reviewers. This is a great apartment and the supers have always treated me with respect. It is a good clean place with friendly people. I highly recommend it. We've had the same negative experiences as the other reviewer. I don't know what's up with those supers, but they act like they are at war with the tenants. Why the total disdain? They, as with all of us, have this one life, and they are spending it being angry and spiteful at pretty much everything every day. It's kind of sad - that is unless you have to deal with them and then it's really annoying (if not larcenous). This is one of the worst apt buildings in Halifax. the super's (3 of them) are very rude, cranky and unjust and lazy they will change you $20 for every door they have to open when a key is broken or not working. They watch and keep tabs on the tenets who are Living there, as well as talk to each other about who they saw and when. The laundry rooms are convenient however they are unreliable and will not dry all the clothing. Security is a joke as the main door into the building will remain unlocked for 1 Min after you enter and you will have to wait for the system to restart until you are able to unlock the door again and that takes 1 min as well. The super's (3 if them) are bully's and will do all they are able to do to make a persons life difficult. The hot tub is dirty, although it looks clean do not let this fool you. I used it 2 times and had to see a doctor to have a rash treated. if you are planing to have people over, be car-full as they will question your friends and family as well as give them attitude if you do not respond to a intercom request.
